he had heart once. it was cracked open and frozen over, blood turned to ice (blue and white with fragments of crystalglassnightmares crawling under his skin) with the simple touch of metal to his chest.

it shouldn’t be that easy to make him-

that steady mantra replaces his heartbeat, floods through his veins and turns the world blue. that simple, easy command makes him want to sink to he knees, feel the cold floor as it seeps through his muscles (into him, chill him to the bone) and reminds him that this is his place, right here, right next to-

it’s barely an echo now, something that tastes like freedom and warmth and- (it’s a lie, whispers silky sweet, pushes that thought away and replaces it with beautiful, cold submission) and it can stay that way, he thinks. this is better, this is easy and beautiful and perfect.

and Loki laughs, pushes the cold in deeper, burns away the last vestiges of heat and smiles.

It cannot be said that Loki is not a patient man (god, force to be reckon with), he knows how to lay traps and slink into shadows and wait until the time is right, knows what words to say (just a phrase here, the emphasis of a word there) to pull and lure and spark a war and, apparently, ignite the curiosity of a genius (and, while he might be a genius, Tony isn’t all that bright because he falls into that traps and doesn’t seem to care)

Tony knows that he is in trouble when Steve pulls him aside with that frown creasing his brows, blue eyes that little bit harder and shoulders squared (like he was expecting a fight and,well, it was Tony) but what he doesn’t expect is for Steve to stare at him (silent and searching and caring) for a moment, making him fidget ever so slightly, before sighing and ruffling his hair and, in a tone of fond exasperation, telling him not to hurt Loki because they really like Tony breathing (and New York standing, but that is an afterthought, he hopes).

It never takes the god long to find the right angle, the right degree to attack from to get exactly the reaction that he seems to be looking for from Tony, whether it’s a snide remark or a wounded look the god knows the chinks in his armour (and sometimes, when the gods are feeling magnanimous, the aim is for muffled moans and bitten off curses pressed into the creases of skin and silk).

gravity
Gravity, for lack of a better word, is a bitch and Tony knows this, knew this the first time he flew too high (oh Icarus, watch your wings burn) and thought he was above her grasp (you don’t sell weapons and expect not to get caught in a war, it just doesn’t make sense) and was reminded of it (of gravity and his own mortality) when he was tossed from a high-rise window by an apparently unimpressed god (this time is a lot more like falling than like dying, he can almost appreciate the ride down)

laugh
The sound of breaking glass is, much to Tony’s horror, the first thing that comes to mind when he hears the silver-tongued god laugh (and not one of those fake, condescending laughs, either, but a real laugh) and it brings back the memories (fragments and a prickle of pain at the base of his skull where he still has a scar from a wayward piece of reinforced Stark Tower window) of falling, not flying, and that surge of adrenaline when you know you’ve fallen over the edge (except, maybe that isn’t a memory, maybe that’s right now).
